For many young lube mechanics and auto mechanics like Tim Frischkorn, electrical work can be very intimidating. As a self-taught mechanic, Tim had spent the past five years as a lube mechanic at Audi Bedford, and his lack of electrical knowledge was keeping him from moving forward in his career.
Like many repair shop managers, Jason Sweeney saw the raw potential in Tim, but didn’t have the time or resources to train in-house. That’s why he turned to Matrix Trade Institute as the solution to training his young mechanics.
Through our Electrical UpSkill Efficiency Bootcamp, Tim was able to learn how to conduct basic electrical repairs in as little as two weeks. Tim cites Matrix’s approach to teaching as the difference maker for him. Like many mechanics, he doesn’t describe himself as a “classroom” or “book” learner. Rather, Tim is more of a hands-on learner, where he needs to be able to see, touch, and work with the material he’s learning. That’s why we use interactive learning software over textbooks before going right to the breadboards and practicing hands-on repetitions on bugged vehicles in the shop.
Tim says, “After the Matrix Electrical Bootcamp, it was totally different. Once I understood short-to-grounds and how relays work, I started really liking it. Now, when a fuse pops, I know to start at the beginning, read the schematic, and follow the steps to a correct diagnosis in order to save time and fix it right.”
With the jolt to his confidence, Tim now looks forward to solving each electrical puzzle. Where other mechanics want to avoid deep-dive electrical concerns, Tim steps right up and tackles the issue. He now does as many as two to three electrical jobs per day, from wiring repairs to difficult diagnosis and repairs on advanced adaptive cruise control systems and lane departure systems.
